What Size Lawn Mower Do I Need?
The cutting width is perhaps the most important factor when matching a lawnmower to lawn size. However, large mowers are heavy and can be tough to manoeuvre. If your garden is flat and without flower beds, trees etc., then wide is good. But, for more complex shapes and slopes, a smaller & lighter model is preferable.
For a small lawn (less than 50m²) a compact mower that’s manoeuvrable and easy to store makes good sense. A corded model is a decent budget option. But if you want the convenience & safety of cordless, you’ll need to spend a few quid more.
Small Garden Recommended Width: Upto 34cm
We class a medium lawn as anything up to the size of a tennis court (260m²). A corded mower ticks the budget box, but going cordless means you can forget about getting tangled with extension leads and the risk of running over the cord.
Medium Garden Recommended Width: 32cm to 38cm
Choosing a lawnmower for a large lawn means you need a wide cut, a large collection box and more power. A few years back, this meant a petrol engine. However, in 2023, cordless models do it all. Plus, there’s no range problem. Most UK gardens are doable on a single charge, but if you’re cutting a large lawn simply buy a second battery & you double the range.
Large Garden Recommended Width: 38cm & over
Are Cordless Lawn Mowers Worth It?
Cordless lawn mowers offer improved safety and convenience. And the new models available now in 2022 are powerful & reliable. Regardless of whether you see cutting the grass as a chore or pleasure, use the best cordless lawn mower [no trailing cable] and you’re guaranteed a great result, every time – Safe & without hassle.
Choosing the Right Batteries
Buy a Bosch, Ryobi or Makita cordless lawnmower and you also get quality batteries, that you can use with the same brand of power & garden cordless tools.
This may not sound exciting, but next time you buy a power tool, whether it’s a garden trimmer or drill, stay with the same brand and you’ll save a small fortune. Simply use the same battery & charger across all your devices.
The Flymo is a decent option if you’re lacking storage space and on a tight budget. Then comes the Bosch Rotak, which is our top corded recommendation for small to medium-sized lawns.
However, there’s never been a better time to buy a battery-powered lawn mower & start the switch to cordless power tools. They’re powerful, safe and convenient.
For small to medium-sized gardens, the Bosch CityMower is compact and gets the job done quickly and without fuss.
For larger areas, the Makita DLM432Z replaces old petrol models. Powerful, effective & easy to use – it ticks all the right boxes.
